I am more productive, calm, and centered when I do certain things every morning before my day gets started to set the tone and go in feeling as good as I can. Your morning really sets your intention for the day so here are a few tips on how to fall into a healthy morning routine:
Drink warm water with lemon every morning when you wake up.
I love doing this because it helps me re-hydrate after a long night of sleep and “warms” my body up – literally and figuratively. I feel like it brings me back to life! Sometimes, I add a pinch of cayenne pepper if I’m feeling particularly groggy or in need of an extra boost.
Move your body in some way every single day.
This can be yoga, walking, cycling, swimming, running, cleaning the house. Whatever it is, just do something for a minimum of 30 minutes that gets your body moving. Daily exercise helps produce feel good brain chemicals, burn calories, and keep your body flexible and fit.
Get some sun.
No, I’m not talking about frying with baby oil until you get skin cancer. I’m talking about 15 minutes of everyday exposure whether that be eating lunch outside, walking around the neighborhood, or reading a book on your patio. Sun is refreshing, gives us energy, and promotes Vitamin D production, which many of us are deficient.
Write it down.
Whatever is on your mind, confusing you, bothering you, or exciting you, letting it out on paper is a really helpful way of releasing your emotions and processing through them so you’re not holding onto unnecessary tension or stress.
I’ve written about why I love meditating so much before, but that’s because it really has changed my life. You don’t have to light candles in a meditation cave and sit still for hours. Just take 10-15 minutes to close your eyes, focus on your breath, and be present. You will feel so much more calm, productive, and happy the rest of the day.
Eat a healthy breakfast.
This is a big one for me in terms of setting a good tone for the day. If I skip or eat a shitty breakfast (my worst moments are leftover macarons or no breakfast at all) I notice I don’t eat that well the rest of the day and I kind of just feel gross. My favorite way to start the day is with a green juice and scrambled or poached eggs with avocado and smoked salmon. I also love sprouted oats with almond butter and berries on top. When I’m really rushing, I love taking a bowl of cut up fruit and almonds in the car or throwing a bunch of greens and fruit in a blender with superfoods and making a quick drinkable meal.
Do something for someone else.
The power of giving is really one of the most amazing feelings in the world. You don’t have to give big, just give something. A compliment, a smile, your time. When you have a positive exchange of energy from yourself to someone else, you are really the one who benefits from it more than they do.
It’s the Japanese practice of finding beauty in imperfection centered on acceptance. I’m a complete perfectionist Type A freak, so accepting imperfection and going with the way things are not the way I think they need to be has been an ongoing and daily practice I work on constantly. But, it’s so freeing. Nothing is perfect and expecting things to be is setting yourself up for disappointment and feeling defeated. Just let it go and accept the imperfections of yourself, others, and the world so you can move on and be happy.
I hope you try and incorporate these tips into your morning routine since they are so simple. All it takes is a small effort to get your routine in place, but soon you’ll feel lost without it.
